The breeze off the ocean began to cool the early evening air as my feet shuffled through the still warm sand. Off to my right, the night sounds of the jungle began to rise as the sun dipped below the horizon. Cheap beer sloshed in my stomach, as troubling questions swirled inside my hazy skull.
Holy Spirit has taken me on a journey in understanding just how important who we are is in this whole "relating with God" thing. In fact, who we are and how He communicates with us have actually never been separate. He has wreathed a unique shared vernacular into the everyday way you exist and uniquely perceive your environment.
There is an old expression for situations when emotions flare or when choices are made that are uncharacteristic of one’s nature and values: “I was not myself”. Wherever this turn of phrase came from, it is a beautifully simple way of acknowledging that first, what you expressed didn’t align with the Fruit of the Spirit, and second, the place that behavior came from was in fact, not you!
